Case Study

This building is one of Calgary’s most popular and sought after condominium buildings in the Beltline region. She is committed to helping the environment by reducing the amount of waste that goes to the landfill. This condominium association and their board of directors are the real superheroes in this case. They have optimized their waste management program to support their residents and reduce waste.

The building has 161 condo units and one garbage room. The efficiency of their waste management program relies on three crucial elements.

crucial elements.

  1. Having an appropriate number of properly sized bins for collection
  2. Frequent and timley pickups
  3. Great communication to residents

Not only does the building have an appropriate amount of bins, but they also have separate bins for five categories of waste: Mixed Recycling (one 6-yd. bin), Refundable (two 96-gal. totes), Cardboard Recycling (one 6-yd. bin), Organic Waste (four 65-gal. totes), and Garbage (one 4-yd. bin and one 6-yd. bin). Pickups are scheduled three times each week to ensure that there is no overflow and that the garbage room stays clean and tidy. There are huge signs throughout the room to guide residents through the appropriate usage of each container.

Signs are placed above each container indicating what is accepted. There are identical signs on the larger bins as well as signs with special instructions (ie. “flatten cardboard). The bins have been placed strategically to allow residents easy access to each area based on how often they are used. The room is clean and free from obstructions, making it easy to navigate. The abundance of signage makes it unmistakeably clear what goes where.

Cardboard Recycling

This building is a prime example of an efficient and effective waste management program. It proves that when a community joins in the cause, a real difference can be made. It is with great honor that we add them to our list of recycling superheroes!
